Mitty, sorry it has taken so long for me to write back. I just got your response today (6/25) and I see you wrote it on 6/2. I haven't been to the board in a while so there is a couple weeks lag time. Man, you are probably the only one who understands the "hamburger" reference. My brother and I joke when we hear a 70's Beach Boys song that maybe is not as strong as some of their other 70's material, that it is probably a "hamburger song." I'm thinking of "I'm bugged at my ol' man," maybe even "Johnny Carson" just to name a few. They have their place, but I have a feeling that Dennis had the McDonald's or perhaps, in California, Carl's Jr, bag next to him producing burgers as Brian's reward for popping out each ditty.

Yes, Beach Boy's today was when the symphonic background sound started to emerge. I have heard Carl in prior interview's say he first noticed Brian's musical arrangements change begin with song "Let him run wild." That album was kind of the genesis of the Pet Sounds sound. I bought a couple of the Beach Boys cd's: Sounds of Summer and Warmth of the Sun and my kids are absolutely crazy over them. Every time they get in the car they want me to put one of them in and crank it. Even my 3 year old. They sing along to all the words. Now, I put in one of their box set cds that has songs like "Add some music," "Cool cool water," "Busy doin' nothing," and now they go bat crap over that one too. Maybe they really are my children. It almost get's embarrasing when we come to a stop and their belting out, "well I've been thinking 'bout all the places we surfed and danced and all the faces we've missed..." I love it though. It's great for their musical "foundation" since nowdays you don't hear any music, absolutely nothing, that has any vocal harmony, or complex vocal for that matter. I was explaining to my daughter about "Cool cool water," because she was saying she thought she heard a girl's voice in it. I told her about harmony and how each member is singing a different part: one singing, "have you some cool cool water," another singing, "drip, drip, drip, drip," and Mike singing, "cool, so cool cooling me, cool, so cool, cooling me," and so on. I said put them all together and you have harmony. She loves to sing so I thought it was a good way to expose her to what was possible vocally. We have also looked at old You Tube clips so they know who everyone is, who has died, et el. It's kind of remarkable how they have taken to it.
My brother has 2 girls and they are 15 and 17. The younger daughter is kind of an alternative, goth group, lover and she loves the Beach Boys too. She will ask me about certain things or songs. At the last get together she said they listened to the BB Friends album in the morning. She thinks the music is amazing. This is the same gal that gets into Dresden Dolls, Joy Division, Modest Mouse, Morrisey, etc. Kind of cool.

Anyway, I will let you go. Keep the posts coming.
Best Regards,
Brian
